The Ghost of Genevieve Baptiste
by Robyn Brooks
“She may be dead - but she's not gone - and she's not done”
The Ghost of Genevieve Baptiste is a Southern Gothic tragicomedy, set in Obama-Era New Orleans. Told in eight scenes, in reversed chronological order, this tale weaves together black lesbian love, Hoodoo, the dark arts, mythology, colorism, cultural history, and the richness of the Diaspora. This full-length play explores the collision of race, gender, and fate upon the landscape of the sexualized Black female body. Claudette and Desiree Jarreau are happily married newlyweds until the mesmerizing Genevieve Baptiste, and then her ghost, decide to visit.
