Las Rutas de Julia de Burgos
Synopsis
We celebrate the Centennial of Julia de Burgos (1914-1953) with the one-act play Las rutas de Julia de Burgos. The play presents the genius, the personal struggles and the humanity of the acclaimed Puerto Rican writer Julia de Burgos, focusing on powerful emotions---her passion for words, her love for Dominican leader Juan Isidro Jimenes Grullón and her faith in human solidarity and justice.
Who was Julia de Burgos?
Julia de Burgos was born in the village of Carolina, near San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1914. She published her first book of poems, Poemas en veinte surcos [Poems in twenty furrows] in 1938. In 1940 she traveled to Havana with her lover, Dominican political leader Juan Isidro Jimenes Grullón. After their relationship ended, she settled in New York City, where she worked as a journalist in the pro-independence paper Pueblos Hispanos and in various jobs. Her physical and mental health deteriorated, and she died in 1953 at the age of thirty-nine. It took several weeks for her body to be identified and taken to Puerto Rico by her family and friends.
