This IATI community engagement program brings body awareness and promotes the Latinx culture while dancing and learning the history of the best-known Latin social dances.
The Latin Dance Senior Swing Program is designed for seniors and is based on the exceptional dance idioms of Tango, Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, and Cha-Cha. Sessions will focus on posture, body placement, alignment and musicality. Seniors will learn to use their bodies to attain balance, body line, expression, coordination, awareness, presence, to establish coordination with others, as well as to find their own axis in variations using their inner rhythm along with a Latin tempo. The embrace-a key element of social dances-allows to share one’s space and energy with a partner in a safe and gentle way.
About the Instructor:
Walter Perez began dancing in his hometown, Buenos Aires, when he was twenty-one. He first started dancing as a therapy – a way of coping with loss – but the Tango life soon seduced him and he dedicated more and more of his life and time to dancing; and what started as therapy became a profession. In 2000 he moved to New York to dance, teach and perform. New York is a dancer’s paradise where all the arts flourish. His dancing has matured in New York, but he continues his quest to evolve as an artist.
