Synopsis
Each year Cecilia and her family get together in remembrance of her son, Samuel. And every year the reunion turns into a chaotic family feud, filled with unspoken feelings, mental health taboos, and guilt. This not-so-functional family must deal with tremendous loss, while trying to accommodate each other’s unique way of coping. Trigger warning: Subject matter includes discussion of suicide.
About the Playwright
Marielle Vizcarra, earned her Bachelor's degree in Communication and Theatre minor from UC San Diego in 2018. Her first play, Not a Family Gathering, was produced by Fair Play Theatre Company in March 2018. In April 2019, Marielle’s play, Diosito Lindo, was produced by TuYo Theatre Company during their show titled “-UN”. She has been a member of a Latinx playwrighting group called Pa’ Letras since February 2021. As a member of Pa’ Letras, four of Marielle’s short plays have either been made available online or were part of a stage reading (in-person and virtual). Scripps Ranch Theatre selected Marielle’s play, Tamales de Piña, to be part of their Local Flavor Reading series in October 2022. Marielle identifies herself as a writer who occasionally enjoys acting and has recently taken up podcasting. She is fascinated by the family dynamic in Latinx households and enjoys portraying these stories in her work.
